Best SUV 2017 – Is there such a thing? The success of SUV’s last year has created a massive influx of new buyers and in turn, first time entrants.  The market is so strong, that Bentley created the Bentayga, Lamborghini is bringing the Urus to life, Rolls-Royce has began working on an SUV, Aston Martin is developing the DBX and other brands are hot on the trail of creating new niche sized SUVs for the market to gobble up.

Today we’re looking at the Best SUV 2017 , and given how hot this market is right now, the new year will bring some fantastic options for your utility vehicle.  To make it easy for you,  we created a list of the top 10 choices for you in the most objective way possible.

Clearing The Smoke:

The category of SUVs can be broken into many different subcategories.  There are compact SUVs, luxury SUVs, hybrids, crossovers and even more than that.  On top of that, the price range across the board varies from coast-to-coast.  For example, on the compact SUV front you have something like the Buick Encore; While on the other side of things, you have the Bentley Bentayga.

The huge variation in price point means that these vehicles are made for two different purposes.  Bentayga for the most luxurious of luxurious, and the Encore for the practical and cost efficient.  However, they are directly comparable in what they bring to the table in terms of value and other features.  Let’s see what happens when we venture into the world of the Best SUV’s that 2017 has to offer.  From Porsche to Subaru, from Mercedes to Kia, here are the top 10 SUVs on the market for 2017:

#10 Subaru Outback:

The 2017 Subaru Outback SUV is part of a lineup that has proved itself over the years to be safe, reliable and a pleasure to own.  On top of the Outback’s practicality, it is also capable in an off-road setting and very comfortable.  The price point of the Outback also means that it is perfectly attainable for average people, versus the uber-luxury of the Mercedes GLS-Class.

While Subaru’s Outback isn’t exactly quick or able to hold its own at a drag strip, (not sure why you’d want to take an Outback to a dragstrip…actually that does sound fun.) it doesn’t weigh 5,000 pounds which means the small engine with small output can make a happy pairing to the Outback it is attached to.

This means that the 2017 Subaru Outback is perfect for the adventurous person who needs some good space to store their bags and road trip necessities.

#9 Jeep Grand Cherokee:

Seating: 5-7
Wheelbase: 114.8 Inches (2.89 Meters)

Cargo Room: 36.3 cu-ft , 68.3 cu-ft.

The 2017 Grand Cherokee comes in a number of trim-levels, including the comically fast SRT.  Each Cherokee trim has ample power, perfect off-road capabilities, stylish interior and many color combinations to personalize the vehicle with.  Jeep makes a number of great vehicles, but the current generation Grand Cherokee is in its finest form with a number of awards.

Also note that the back seat is very comfortable.  Bolstering on all the seats is ample, and you don’t need to pay extra for leather seats just to get them heated.  The cloth heated seats are perfectly comfortable and don’t feel awkward at all.

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee makes a great family transporter, as well as a capable off-roader.  And if you get the SRT, you probably have a fantastic sense of humor.

#8 Audi Q7:

The Specs:

Vehicle Type: Large SUV
Powertrain: 2.0L T I4, 3.0L S/C V6
Gearbox: 6-speed TIPTRONIC automatic
Power: 252 – 333 HP
MPG: 25 Highway, 20 City
Torque: 273 – 325 Lb-Ft.
Length: 200 Inches (5.08 Meters)
Width: 78 Inches (1.98 Meters)

Top Speed: 145 – 155 MPH (234 – 250 KPH)
Seating: 7
Wheelbase: 117.9 Inches (2.99 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 5.5 – 6 seconds
Base Price: $49,000 (est.)
Cargo Room: 15 cu-ft , 71.6 cu-ft.

The Audi Q7 is the largest SUV that Audi offers.  You get German comfort and great engineering, along with agility for its size.  This earns the Audi Q7s spot on the list alone.  According to Car and, the powertrains in the Q7’s arsenal provide ample power to move the SUVs massive 5,000 pound curb weight.

Audi’s Q7 has been in the product lineup for a number of years now, but the great thing about that is that the Q7 keeps maturing.  Refinement through the years is how cars like the VW GTi, 370z, Maserati GT and many others have gotten so good.  The Audi Q7 is headed down the right path in that regard.  Better and better.

The combination of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, great brake engineering, comfortable interior and great powerplant make the Audi Q7 a fantastic vehicle.

#7 Porsche Macan:

2017 Porsche SUV

The Specs:

Vehicle Type: Luxury Midsize SUV
Powertrain: 2.0L T 4-cyl, 3.6L V6, 3.0L TT V6
Gearbox: 7-speed dual clutch automatic
Power: 252 – 400 HP
MPG: Up to 25 Highway, 20 City
Torque: 273 – 406 Lb-Ft.
Length: 185 Inches (4.7 Meters)
Width: 76 Inches (1.93 Meters)
Height: 64 Inches (1.62 Meters)
Top Speed: 142 (228.5 KPH)
Seating: 5
Wheelbase: 110.5 Inches (2.8 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 4.4 seconds
Base Price: $47,500
Cargo Room: 17.7 cu-ft – 53 cu-ft.

The Porsche Macan has been a big release for Porsche since it was revealed in 2014 for the U.S.  Hot on the trail of the big SUV boom in sales, the Macan has gained more than enough traction with customers.

The Porsche Macan is arguably one of the sharpest SUV’s on the market today, even though its design is dominantly made of rounded edges.  Nevertheless, Porsche did a fantastic job with the Macan in every way.

The price point is fantastic for a prestigious badge, the interior is premium, styling is great and the driving dynamics are distinctly Porsche.  On top of that, the Macan doesn’t share the rather unfortunate price tag of its cousin, a base 911 that goes for $100,000, and starts at around $50,000.  Not cheap, but not ridiculous.  It is also worth noting that Porsche is introducing a 2.0L T to its lineup for the Macan in 2017, which means fuel efficiency and more Macans on the road.  Good for you and good for Porsche.

#6 BMW X1

The Specs:

Vehicle Type: Subcompact SUV
Powertrain: 2.0L 4-cyl Turbo
Gearbox: 7-speed automatic
Power: 228 HP
MPG: Up to 32 Highway, 22 City
Torque: 258 Lb-Ft.
Length: 175 Inches (4.44 Meters)
Width: 72 Inches (1.88 Meters)
Height: 64 Inches (1.62 Meters)
Top Speed: 129 (207.6 KPH)
Seating: 5
Wheelbase: 105.1 Inches (2.67 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 6.4 seconds
Base Price: $33,100
Cargo Room: 27.1 cu-ft – 58.7 cu-ft.

The BMW X1 is a relatively fresh entry into BMW’s luxury line up.  But the small SUV has fared more than well among its bigger brothers like the X5, X6 and X4.  The X1 is priced very well, and delivers better than expected.  Some customers point to the X1’s front wheel drive as some cause of concern, but entry into the vehicle is very easy and natural, drive quality is still high and its capabilities are still very good.

The styling of the X1 is also very youthful and dynamic.  The interior is a refreshing place to be with the right amount of BMW DNA and an updated formula.

#5 Honda CR-V:

Vehicle Type: Small SUV
Powertrain: 1.5L I4 , 2.4L I4
Gearbox: 7-speed CVT automatic
Power: 184 – 190 HP
MPG: Up to 34 Highway, 28 City
Torque: 179 – 180 Lb-Ft.
Length: 181 Inches (4.59 Meters)
Width: 73 Inches (1.85 Meters)
Height: 67 Inches (1.7 Meters)
Top Speed: 112 MPH (180 KPH)
Seating: 5
Wheelbase: 104.7 Inches (2.65 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 7.5 seconds
Base Price: $24,045
Cargo Room: 39.2 cu-ft , 75.8 cu-ft.

The Honda CR-V has definitely been around the block, and has new updated styling for 2017.  The SUV is a bit larger and better equipped than previous generations (every model gets a back-up camera) making this Honda icon better than ever.  I am a huge fan of Honda’s new design scheme, especially on the new Civic.  It seems the parent brand is learning a lot from the Acura NSX, and that is exactly where their inspiration should come from.  The whole lineup is super sharp and super athletic.

Fantastic fuel economy, great cargo space, great build quality and impressive driving dynamics made the 2017 Honda CR-V  U.S. News Best Compact SUV.

#4 Mercedes GLS-Class

2017 Mercedes GLS

Vehicle Type: Large Luxury SUV
Powertrain: 3.0L V6, 3.0L V6 D, 4.7L V8
Gearbox: 9G-TRONIC automatic
Power: 255 – 450 HP
MPG: Up to 22 Highway, 19 City
Torque: 369 – 516 Lb-Ft.
Length: 202 Inches (5.13 Meters)
Width: 76 Inches (1.93 Meters)
Height: 73 Inches (1.85 Meters)
Top Speed: 155 (249 KPH)
Seating: 7
Wheelbase: 121.1 Inches (3.07 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 5.7 seconds
Base Price: $67,000 – 125,000 (AMG GLS63)
Cargo Room: 16 cu-ft – 93.8 cu-ft.

While the GLS isn’t exactly the S-Class of SUV’s, it’s as close as we can get right now.  Regardless, this big boy Mercedes-Benz is a serious land cruiser.  Filled to the brim with everything that makes a Mercedes great and the pure size to rival any blue whale.

Mercedes offers an incredible range of options for the interior of the GLS, which means you can have it all without spending the price of a Bentley Bentayga.  Which is why we chose the GLS and not the Bentayga for a large luxury SUV.  While there are some interior elements that are a bit outdated, the GLS makes itself very apparent that it is the biggest Mercedes SUV in 2017 that you can buy.  If that isn’t enough, go ahead and look into the Mercedes-AMG GLS63.  You won’t be let down.

#3 Jaguar F-Pace

2017 Jaguar F-Pace

Vehicle Type: Midsize SUV / Sport SUV
Powertrain: 2.0L 4-cyl D, 3.0L V6 S/C
Gearbox: 8-speed automatic
Power: 180-380 HP
MPG: 23 Highway, 18 City
Torque: 318 – 332 Lb-Ft.
Length: 186 Inches (4.72 Meters)
Width: 82 Inches (2.08 Meters)
Height: 65 Inches (1.65 Meters)
Top Speed: 160 (257.5 KPH)
Seating: 5
Wheelbase: 113.1 Inches (2.87 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 7.5 – 4.4 seconds
Base Price: $41,990
Cargo Room: 33.5 cu-ft

The 2017 Jaguar SUV called the F-Pace is a stunner.  It looks athletic and aggressive with muscular lines all over the place.  The SUV is truly a game changer for Jaguar as a brand, and unlike a lot of first attempts, the F-Pace was received well by critics and customers.

I have to say that I think this is the best looking SUV out there right now.  Sports car manufactures moving into the SUV market are usually met with mean looks, because well, what do they know about practical SUV’s?  But, Jaguar did a fantastic job combining the sporty DNA of wide hips, athletic lines, big air intakes and hungry eyes with practical, stylish, functional and intuitive.

Superior driving dynamics to its competitors, performance accustom to a jaguar, incredible head-turning looks and a comfortable interior put the F-Pace on the list for the top SUVs of 2017.

#2 Kia Soul:

2017 Kia Soul

Vehicle Type: Compact SUV
Powertrain: 1.6L I4
Gearbox: 7-speed dual clutch automatic
Power: 201 HP
MPG: 31 Highway, 26 City
Torque: 195 Lb-Ft.
Length: 163 Inches (4.14 Meters)
Width: 71 Inches (1.8 Meters)
Height: 64 Inches (1.62 Meters)
Top Speed: 124 MPH (199 KPH) (limited)
Seating: 5
Wheelbase: 108.1 Inches (2.58 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 7.8 seconds
Base Price: $16,100
Cargo Room: 18.8 cu-ft , 49.5 cu-ft.

The Kia Soul is much too overlooked for what it offers.  The compact SUV has been available for a few years, which is a great fact because it has matured and gotten even better since its release.

Year after year you hear of the Kia Soul being ranked as one of the best SUV’s out there, even with how small it is.  You just can’t beat a reliable, preppy and safe mini SUV even if you’re priced like a Mercedes-AMG GLS63.

From J.D. Power, Kia has received the top honor in an Initial Quality Study.  That award goes hand-in-hand with the fact that the Kia Soul is one of the best choices for a first car, and as reliable as they come.

#1 Mazda CX-9

2017 Mazda CX-9

Vehicle Type: Full Size SUV
Powertrain: 2.5L four cylinder
Gearbox: 7-speed automatic
Power: 227 HP
MPG: Up to 28 Highway, 22 City
Torque: 310 Lb-Ft.
Length: 199 Inches (5.05 Meters)
Width: 77 Inches (1.95 Meters)
Height: 69 Inches (1.75 Meters)
Top Speed: 113 MPH (181.8 KPH)
Seating: 7
Wheelbase: 104.7 Inches (2.65 Meters)
0-60 MPH (0-120 KPH): 7.2 seconds
Base Price: $32,460
Cargo Room: 14.4 cu-ft , 71.2 cu-ft.

Mazda has been doing some great things for their lineup.  They design some of the most great looking vehicles on the road, especially when you consider Mazda’s price point.  This carries over to the SUVs Mazda offers as well.  The CX-9 is a fantastic vehicle in and out.  And when you consider how much you really get for $32,000,  the CX-9 is a top option for 2017.

One thing I can’t get over is the insane value you get from Mazda.  On all of their cars.  You get so many luxurious and upscale options for such a great price, but you can get that from other manufactures as well.  Mazda kicks it up a notch and again, makes some of the most lovlely cars you can buy.  The lines flow so nicely in and outside of the vehicle, and Mazda’s whole design DNA is really coming together.  It’s apparent on each of their cars with now iconic wavy lines and athletic poise. I’m in love, and so are many other people.

Best SUV 2017

I will say this, though.  I am a bit disappointed that Mazda has not created a performance vehicle, or some sort of sport edition or trim for their Mazda6 or Mazda3.  The brand is marketing itself as a driver-oriented brand, and for that to make any sense,  we need a Mazdaspeed3 AT LEAST in the lineup.  Given what they can do on a design front to their standard cars, I’d love to see what they can do when handed an aero kit and quad exhaust tips.  Wouldn’t you?

Not only is the CX-9 great, but Mazda’s whole SUV line up for 2017 is great.  Take your pick!  Between the CX-3, CX-5, and now the CX-9, they each have their similarities but also their own DNA.  It is a great lineup from a great marque.

What do you think about this new Mazda RX-9?

Conclusion – Best SUV 2017:

This list was definitely difficult to make an objective decision about where to put each vehicle.  Each has it’s own special charm or perk that had to be considered for the buyers out there.  In the end though, the Mazda CX-9 has to take the cake.  Mazda as a brand makes fantastic vehicles now more than ever.

Ever since being sold from Ford, Mazda has really stepped up their design game (PLEASE Check out the Mazda RX – Vision).  The brand has come a long way already, and makes fabulous affordable cars that look fantastic and drive like luxury automobiles.  Everything great about Mazda as a brand is communicated in the CX-9 and is done is a reliable, sexy, modern, practical and potent package.
