There have been years and years of companies redesigning and recreating their vehicles to be more hardcore and performance ready. It is a car world practice that is almost as old as time itself. The 2018 Honda Civic Type R is no exception to this rule, taking a little office commuter to a legendary tuner. The Civic Type R has been a great of the automotive world for years, and now the 2018 Honda Civic Type R is coming back to the United States. The hype train has left the station and is picking up huge amounts of momentum.
At the 2017 Detroit International Auto Show in January, the Civic Type R converted many people into believers. It is a true show stopping with plenty of punch to help back up its super aggressive styling. There is a lot to learn about the hottest of hatches, so let’s see what it’s all about.
You can’t tell me that doesn’t look awesome. It looks like it’s been modeled off of some sort of ninja weapon. Honda didn’t hold anything back on the 2018 Civic Type R. Look at those front splitters, the hood intake, the angry eyes, the red brake calipers, huge intakes on the bumper, wide fenders and obnoxious wing. Without the photo, you’d think I was describing some Ferrari or Lamborghini or McLaren. But I’m talking about a Civic. A HONDA CIVIC!
At the rear you have triple exhaust tips that remind me of the 458 Italia, and so many crazy creases and edges it’s hard to immediately take in. A red outline on the diffusor can be seen as well; and the most immense factory installed wing I’ve ever seen dawns on top of it all. Insanity from Honda.
The 2018 Honda Civic Type R makes its mission very clear just from looking at it. It is the most hardcore a Civic can get. Usually when automotive manufactures make hardcore versions of their cars, they don’t add the giant wing, the massive diffusor or pretty much anything the Civic Type R has. And that is another reason the 2018 Honda Civic Type R is special. It takes literally everything to a new level of crazy.
Honda loves making their instrument clusters look like they came out of a fighter jet which is fine, but pretty much everything else you see in here is focused to fit the driver. No automatic transmission, no paddles either. Only a manual 6-speed is offered in here, with all the suede, carbon fiber and red trim you could possibly want. I think the most impressive part in here is the fact we don’t see three gauges sticking out of the A-pillar or an expansion out of the dashboard to tell the driver the coolant temperature, PSI measurement or voltage. It looks very mature in that respect in here.
I love the interior. It’s plain and simple and easy to understand. Which is the complete opposite of the exterior…
Honda did a fantastic job on the inside of the 2018 Honda Civic Type R, and even the normal Civic’s interior looks great. There aren’t too many differences between the Type R and the normal Honda Civic on the inside really, and I like that. One huge difference though is the fact the seats look ridiculous.
Type R’s have always had these kinds of seats. Carbon Fiber? Check. Obnoxious bolstering? Check. Now this interior element is right on par with the exterior styling. Judging from the interior and exterior, it looks like this Civic will be insanely fun to drive.
Here is the part when things get really, really fun. Right off the bat, we’re looking at a front-wheel-drive Civic. Nothing new there. But that fact gets more interesting when I tell you this 2018 Honda Civic Type R will have 310 HP. Three hundred ten horsepower out of a front wheel drive Civic from the factory. Power comes from a 2.0L Turbo charged four cylinder engine, coupled with 295 Lb-Ft of torque to go along with it. While Honda is rather staying keen on the Type R’s DNA with front wheel drive, the rest of it’s competition has switched to all wheel drive. This is not necessarily a bad thing either. With all the performance tuning upgrades this new car has, it should be able to keep up with the likes of the Focus RS on the track, along with the Subaru WRX STi.
As mentioned, the 2018 Honda Civic Type R will only offer a 6-speed manual transmission. Fair enough.

Sum It Up:
The return of the 2018 Honda Civic Type R is going to trigger massive sales for Honda, guaranteed. I will love to see some head-to-heads between the Civic Type R and its competitors to see how it really stacks up, and if the front wheel drive actually hinders the cars performance over all. In the end, I’m sure many car enthusiasts over here in America will be jumping for joy now that they can get their hands on a legend they’ve been waiting for years to see. There is no doubt that this new addition to the long time line of Type R’s will be a great one, combining everything great about modern cars and ridiculously huge spoilers. Eat your heart out, tuners of the world; The 2018 Honda Civic Type R will be hitting store shelves this spring.
