Since the Buick Regal was (kind of) re-released back in 2009, it hasn’t really redefined its segment or really produced a groundbreaking model. This is what happens when you use the same platform as the Chevy Malibu.
It isn’t really a performance sedan, and it really isn’t a luxury sedan. It’s pretty small and doesn’t offer as much as competitors.
Even so, the Buick Regal does make a good case for itself, even when it doesn’t know what it is.
In the current generation, Buick’s Regal does have a comfortable and stylish interior, and many amenities for the passengers. Plus, it is genuinely affordable.
The 2018 Buick Regal is a complete overhaul of the current car. Plus, the US might be getting the wagon version of the car. I know that a 2018 Buick Regal wagon doesn’t sound 100% cool, but trust me, it is great.
Because the actual 2018 Buick Regal is just now exiting the testing phase, there aren’t many official pictures of the car in production form.
To get a good idea of what to expect, Opel has released the Insignia which is pretty much exactly what the 2018 Buick Regal will be like.
The Opel Insignia shares exactly everything with the 2018 Buick Regal, besides a couple badges. Usually, I’m not crazy about copy and pasting in the car industry, but the Buick/Opel thing seems to work well.
In the last decade, Buick was just confused. They’re going through a similar puberty that Cadillac is, but it’s a bit more choppy. However, the 2018 Buick Regal seems to be a huge step in the right direction. I’d call it a leap in the right direction.
Compared to the previous generation, the 2018 Buick Regal looks a lot more collected and focused. The front end is much sharper with more defined bones and a much more professional look over the more childish look of the previous generation.
One thing I wish the 2018 Buick Regal had, is a longer front end. It is a cheaper look when the front end is shortened and the roofline is high. I can’t complain though, the new model is well beyond the previous one.
The rear end of the 2018 Buick Regal does resemble the outgoing model a bit with the way it’s shaped. Other than that, the tail lights are created with sharper angles and a couple added slashes here and there, but it’s a familiar face (or butt) for the most part.
One thing I can’t unsee is this rear window…design…thing. I’m sure there’s a reason why it’s there, but I can’t unsee it.
Now the 2018 Buick Regal Wagon is really stealing the headlines for the car. It is very interesting to look at, and is clear exactly what car the Regal wagon is looking to take on.
The Audi A4 wagon and the 2018 Buick Regal wagon are way too similar. The Opel version looked much more distinct and unique, while the new TourX model looks much like an Audi double. Even the headlights are pretty much shaped the same way.
One design difference between the two is the fact that the Regal’s nose is a big more pushed out compared to the recessed nose on the Audi. It’ll be fun to see a head to head comparison of the two cars, since they so similar.
On the wagon, you get the black plastic on the exterior lining of the wheel wells and fenders, making the whole car look a bit more rugged.
The rear end of the 2018 Buick Regal wagon is the most original body panel on the car. The wagon look really fits the Regal family.
While the current generation Buick Regal’s interior isn’t much to make a story about, everything is easy to figure out, it’s comfortable, and has plenty of leather.
It is a comfortable place to sit and to be in, but nothing to write home about.
It looks like the interior of the 2018 Buick Regal will embody the same concept. Everything inside is easily laid out and simple to understand. The infotainment screen is cleanly inserted into the dash, climate controls are easy to understand and there are pretty wood inserts on the center console.
The interior of the 2018 Buick Regal gets a good thumbs up for me. It doesn’t look like it’d trying to be a Mercedes, but still looks well dressed. As long as the touchscreen on the infotainment system is responsive, easy to use and accurate, we have a winner.
The chassis work will be the same from the 2018 Buick Regal and the Chevy Malibu, which is not surprising. The 2018 Buick Regal will also utilize GM’s versatile 2.0 L turbocharged four cylinder engine, the Malibu’s 1.5 L turbo four, and an all new 10 speed automatic transmission.
The Regal will also ditch the 2.4 L four cylinder for the new model year to make room for that 1.5 L turbo. We can expect a power range of 200 HP for the 1.5, and 250 HP for the 2.0 L turbo.
As for a potential 2018 Buick Regal GS, there are no plans available. If it does come out though, we should expect a beefier 2.0 L four cylinder with a turbo bolted to it, producing close to 300 horsepower.

Sum It Up:
I think that the new 2018 Buick Regal will have a similar life to the current model. However, the new one looks much, much better. I do also really want to see a GS.
