The world of trucks is a big, muscular, who-can-pull-more kind of world.
Truck commercials are usually an onslaught of job sites with guys throwing obnoxious objects into the beds of trucks, trucks pulling things, and a lot of construction stuff.
It’s an interesting world where the taller you can tower over normal traffic, the better. The bigger your truck is, the cooler you are.
There’s people who use trucks for their intended purpose, and there’s people who get trucks just to…have a truck. I never understand the latter.
But anyway, the Ram is one of the top pick up trucks in the world. Generally, the best pick up’s include Chevy’s Silverado, Ford’s F-150 and the Ram. The Ram is probably the best name for a pick up truck.
Ram is a part of FCA, which is basically Chrysler. While I’m not a big fan of Chrysler or their products, the Ram has been one of their best concoctions.
Ram plans on releasing redesigned trucks very soon. One of which, will be the 2017 Ram 3500; The bog boy.
The Ram 3500 is what you get when you need to tow a small city with your truck. This thing is immense.
But given that Ram is redesigning it’s fleet, the 2017 Ram 3500 will be getting a big ol’ face lift.

The Exterior-2017 Ram 3500:
For 2017, we get the same Ram 3500 we saw in 2016. FCA plans on doing a full redesign of the big beast in 2018, along with the Ram 1500.
There are a few different trim levels available for the 2017 Ram 3500, including Tradehorn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, SLT, Bighorn and limited. Clearly Ram likes horns.
While the current truck is definitely getting a bit dated, it still retains itself as a strong staple among the super-big-truck market.
On the 2017 Ram 3500, you get massive “RAM” lettering on the front grille with some trims. I can’t help but imagine if you got hit by one, you’d have “RAM” imprinted wherever the grille hit.
The front end is large, and has a massive nose. It is a tall, muscular design that has worked for years and years.
You get lights on the top of the truck for safety, massive side mirrors so you can see around whatever you’re hauling and tow loops in case you get stuck (somehow).
From the side, you can really see the difference between the Ram 1500 and the 2017 Ram 3500.
The rear fenders are flared out more than any Liberty Walked super car. This is to accommodate for four wheels in the back. Two extra wheels on each side. You do need plenty of rubber to get nine hundred pound feet of torque down…So that makes sense.
Ram’s 3500 is obnoxiously wide, but it always looks like it has some serious work to do, and I appreciate that.
The rear end of the 2017 Ram 3500 is very wide. But the design of the rear end doesn’t actually make it seem super wide. Other than that, the ride height of the 2017 Ram 3500 is very high up.
Over all the 2017 Ram 3500 is the most robust looking Ram you can get from the factory. Everything is larger than life, and makes itself look very apparent about what it is meant to do.
The Interior-2017 Ram 3500:
The interior of the 2017 Ram 3500 has a lot of FCA features in it. But one thing that is missing from the 2017 Ram 3500’s interior that is an FCA product. The missing piece is the turn dial shifting piece.
There’s little else that makes me as mad at the turn dial shifter. Especially in a truck. This feature is in the 2017 Ram 1500, but the 2017 Ram 3500 actually gets the classic pull column. I really appreciate that, because nothing is less manly than a turn dial shifter in a giant truck.
Everything else inside the 2017 Ram 3500 is pretty standard issue truck stuff.
The dashboard is tall, infotainment in the center, large center console, plenty of space in the cabin and a no-nonsense layout.
While the Tradesman interior is one of the most drab interiors I’ve ever seen, the trims with the navigation screen look perfect. It’s not exactly cutting edge, but the 2017 Ram 3500 is a very modern example. I like all of the wood and leather that is available. It is a classic showing of country and luxury.
Depending on what size cab you get, you can seat six adults inside the 2017 Ram 3500. While they all may not be comfortable for very long, you can fit them in there.
The Performance-2017 Ram 3500:
So the massive 6.7 L turbo diesel I6 with Cummins technology produces and idiotic 900 pound feet of torque. Nine hundred.
The 2017 Ram 3500 also offers a classic 6.4 L V8 engine that may be short on horsepower figures for such a large engine, produces an impressive 429 pound feet of torque.
Horsepower is never really on the forefront of these massive trucks. Torque is what gets the truck to pull as hard as it can, which is why there is always some sort of turbo diesel offered.
There is a manual transmission that is surprisingly offered for the 2017 Ram 3500. Other than that, you get a six speed automatic and a six speed automatic from AISIN. The AISIN transmission can handle all sorts of power and shift smoothly for low-end high torque.
Sum It Up:
While I’m not much of a truck guy, I can appreciate the gritty, hardcore engineering in the 2017 Ram 3500.
