The Mazda RX-9 model is making its official debut this year and will be featured at the Los Angeles Show for the first time for the people to see. This is going to be the second-generation of the RX-9 brand vehicles and it first made its debut in 2006. The brand was in a desperate need for an overhaul as the previous changes came in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Although these changes were mainly minor facelifts for the brand it has been in line for an entire overhaul for quite some time now.

The new 2017Mazda RX-9 model is going to adopt the familiar Kodo Design that the Mazda cars are already known for. This was provided first with the Mazda Koeru concept model which brought us this design in the first place. The incorporation of premium details with a high quality interior and a great design language is what graces this new car. The  SkyActiv is also going to provide the power for the RX-9 as well and we are looking at quite a significant design and a good look for the car.

The makers of Mazda have also stated that the latest RX-9 represents the beginning of a new generation of Mazda cars and crossovers. Whether this proves to be true or not and whether we truly get to experience a shift in the market remains to be seen and we will see this after the release date of the vehicle. For now you can find out all the necessary information about the 2017 Mazda RX-9 in our review.

Exterior Appearance of the 2017 Mazda RX-9

The exterior of the 2018 Mazda RX-9 does not look just like a oversized CX-5, it actually is based more on the Koeru concept and has a lot of aggressive features. The car still has all the makings of a Mazda car and when compared to other models it stands out as it has a bigger grille and some slender headlamps. The front end also has a completely reshaped bumper design

There are many pieces taken from the Koeru concept, and some of them include the wide center intake and vertical, blade-like chrome inserts which are placed on the bumper. It helps it have a wide and sporty stance which is not that common in this segment but certainly helps it look good.

The sporty theme is continued in the back where the car has a pair of slim taillights. There is a chrome strip which goes between the two clusters. But the  lower section of the tailgate and the rear bumper  are actually much more similar to the CX-5 car than the concept model. The side view makes the car very well-proportioned. The hood is long and there is a swept greenhouse. Also larger wheels and  short overhangs make the car much more stable that it was.

The 2017 Mazda RX-9 is actually 1.2 inches shorter than the previous car but has a 2.2-inch longer wheelbase, with 2.3 inches shorter overhangs and A-pillars which were shifted back 3.9 inches back. It rides on  either 18- or 20-inch wheels  and also offers seven exterior colors as well.

Inside Changes

The interior redesign for the 2017 Mazda RX-9 brings a very impressive cabin which now seems much more expensive than it actually is. It still bares the similar aluminum dashboard insert though and a  free-standing screen, it still has plenty to offer to its users.

Compared to other Mazda cars, the upper section of the dashboard is very uniquely designed. There are A/C vents added but the driver’s side is more familiar as it has not changed much. It still has the same instrument cluster with three big gauges and the same  three-spoke steering wheels.

The innovations include the aluminum and wood inserts placed in the door panels and also in the center stack. It helps the car look and feel more luxurious. You can even order the car with original Japanese rosewood, Nappa leather in Supple Auburn and contrast stitching for the center console armrest which is offered in the highest rated models.

Some of the convenience features that the car comes with include a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen for the Mazda Connect infotainment system, Bluetooth, a 4.5-inch TFT screen, a color head-up display projected onto the lower windshield and  2.1-amp USB ports for charging your phones.

Powertrain Options

Under the hood of the new 2017 Mazda RX-9 vehicle there is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, SkyActiv engine found. It helps the car generate 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque now which is 23 horses more but 40 pound-feet than  compared to the V-6 engine previously used. Also this cars weighs a lot less and it cuts down 198 pounds  in its FWD form and 287 pounds with an AWD system. The car now has better performance specs and also consumes less fuel with the help of this engine setup.
