2017 Chevrolet Malibu Review

The introduction of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, which is announced for the forthcoming New York Auto Show, is supposed to fix some glitches that the car has been struggling in the past. In fact, there have been a lot of issues with the sales and it is mostly due to the storing competition with the likes of Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord taking advantage in the field and getting all the glory. The last Malibu model was released in 2012, which is not that long ago and Chevy is forced to do something ahead of plan an introduce a redesigned version of its current eight-generation model.

The history of the Malibu brand is closely tied to the Chevelle models of the past. In fact the Malibu started off as a range-topping trim level of the Chevelle and it also features better luxury and an added V-8s engine. In 1978 it became the best selling model and it also received its own brand name which helped the car start off individually from there. The model had a brief break between 1983 and 1997, but managed  to return in a great fashion. The latest model was released in 2012 and marked the beginning of its eight-generation models, which we are going to get a refresh of for the 2017 season.

The 2012 model became a global vehicle as it came with a range of four-cylinder and V-6  engines and three transmissions choices, with an Epsilon II platform as well which also the Buick Regal and Buick LaCrosse models shared. The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu promises to be a much more upscale model and is going to be a great alternative for the cars that top the segment currently. What do you think? Will the new Malibu model stand a chance against other rivals in the field and be able to top them? You can get our opinion in the review below.

Exterior design

The exterior design of the new 2017 Chevrolet Malibu promised some changes and we got what we wanted to see out of the new car. The design is a lot sportier looking as it is much more sleeker compared to before and also longer compared to the previous model. The main advantage of the newest Malibu is that it is very elegant looking and it owes a lot of to the Chevy Impala where they drew the inspiration to get the new styling cues for the model.

The front end of the car is where the Impala cues are more noticeable. You can see it in the design of the headlights and the front apron, but the taillights also have a similar style. It also carries the same beltline creases but the 2017 Malibu has an upscale look and has a few unique features of its own like the split front grille. Improvements that are very noticeable are seen in the rear part of the car like the new taillight clusters which gets slimmer as you go to the emblem part. There are also the newly added pointy trunk lid and an updated bumper with some sporty elements. This benefits the car a lot as it offers more aerodynamic features.

Interior concept

The interior of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is generally going to be much more comfortable due to the enhanced and added spacing on the inside. With the extra 3.6 inches in the wheelbase there is going to be an added 1.3 inches of legroom for the passengers in the back. This redesign is also going to keep the car very high-tech and it will enable it to be easy to be used as well. This also means that the new center stack has less buttons and knobs which makes the controls much easier to use and with the added seven-inch color touchscreen it allows the use of even more features compared to before. This is actually a standard offer for the higher trims, but the lesser one still need to upgrade as it is offered as optional for them.

The dashboard is not going to change much as it incorporates the previous wrap-around design, and the three-spoke steering wheel also includes and new and different button layout. Also the Satin chrome accents make the interior look much more prominent and upscale. There are also a lot more storage devices placed around the center console and new perforated leather seating surfaces  which is standard for the Premier model and optional for the LT and Hybrid trims. Finally the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu also upgrades the safety features by a long shoot compared to before.

Engine specs and performance

The changes under the hood for the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu are going to feature a newly added entry level engine choice. This is the 1.5-liter, four-cylinder  which is rated at 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and it will be used instead of the  previous 2.5-liter engine. Perhaps the new engine choices has less power but it offers a lot better fuel economy with an EPA rating of  27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway.  Also the new drivetrain is going to combine with a six-speed automatic transmission as its standard offer this time.

The 2.0-liter turbo-four  is also going to be utilized for higher trim level models and will be able to come less power and better fuel economy as well but with an eight-speed automatic as its base choice. The specs offer a rating of 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and fuel efficiency of 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.
