Volvo has always been known as the nerd of the automotive industry. While Volvo’s cars are incredibly safe, their curb appeal was generally low.
If Volvo is the nerd, the Volvo XC60 is the nerd’s pocket protector. You have to realize, though; Calling Volvo the nerd of the auto industry is not a bad thing at all.
Nerdy automotive engineering creates the best cars on earth, and Volvo is up there. The XC60 is practical, safe, intelligent and made with quality. While Mercedes and BMW makes cars that fit the bill as well, Volvo has a certain sensibility to it.
While the Polestar models confuse me, Volvo as a brand does not. They do what they do better than anyone else.
Now we enter the new Volvo. The same ideology that has carried Volvo is alive in their new models, but the style has changed dramatically.
In recent years, Volvo’s face transitioned from an open/friendly lay out to a more poised, focused attitude.
This means that the 2018 Volvo XC60 is the latest to adopt Volvo’s new styling. For 2018, the XC60 adopts new cues from the Volvo flagship, the S90.
The classic Volvo quality meets top-notch design, to make the 2018 Volvo XC60 one of the most respectable cars out there.

The Exterior-2018 Volvo XC60:
If I could put a number to it, the 2018 Volvo XC60 looks approximately 1.2 million times better than the previous Volvo XC60.
In front, you have a completely new design that is a spitting image of the S90. The new T-style headlamps dawn the front with a new, more aggressive grille and splitters.
The fenders are not surrounded by black plastic like we see on many wagons like the 2018 Volvo XC60, they are body colored.
While the body colored fenders make the wagon look less robust than it would with them, the look is more upscale and clean looking. Interestingly, the 2018 Volvo XC60 still looks as capable as it ever has.
From the side, the 2018 Volvo XC60 redesign has a long front end and wonderfully crafted door panels. Sleek lines add a muscular accent to the side, and pinched windows add to this effect.
From the rear, the 2018 Volvo XC60 either sports rectangular exhaust tips or square quad tips. Either way, the 2018 Volvo XC60 wears them confidently.
The new taillight design is complex, to say the least. It is a new evolution of Volvo’s vertacle tali light design that now features a slice into the trunk lid. The sharp angles continue throughout the entire car, and it is worn perfectly.
Overall, the exterior of the Volvo XC60 looks fantastic. I love Volvo’s new style, and I think that it will help Volvo take some business from the German’s.
The Interior-2018 Volvo XC60:
In their previous life (before 2016) Volvo’s interiors were very confusing at first glance. The dashboard was populated with buttons and a person sitting down with buttons to control the air conditioning.
The infotainment was very small as well, and it overall just confused people. But is that the case for the 2018 Volvo XC60? Absolutely not.
The 2018 Volvo XC60’s interior uses the same styling cues and language from the rest of the new Volvo fleet. And that is a very good thing.
Volvo’s new interiors as a whole are absolutely stunning. The 2018 Volvo XC60 adopts a version of the interior Volvo uses on the S90 and other models. The cascading wood and big center display are key features.
The passenger side of the dash board receives a more accented design that flows with the air vents shape. It looks great.
A large center display takes up most of the center dash, and Volvo did away with a number of buttons and switches that would otherwise congest the area.
The 2018 Volvo XC60’s dashboard is intelligently laid out, cleanly formed and wears white better than any interior I’ve ever seen.
Volvo adopts a digital gauge cluster as well, making 90% of the cars infotainment digital. It looks fantastic. Expect the 2018 Volvo XC60 to seat five adults comfortably.
As I stated in the specs above, Volvo offers an interesting assortment of engines.
Usually, car manufactures offer either a naturally aspirated engine or turbo charged engine for their vehicles. But Volvo does things a bit differently.
Volvo offers a turbocharged 2.0 L four cylinder engine, as well as an engine with compound forced induction.
In simple terminology, compound forced induction is a system that uses both a super charger and a turbo charger. That way, the super charger can produce extra power at low RPM, and the turbo charger can produce power at higher RPM.
Compound forced induction is a complex system, but Volvo’s handle the complexity very well.
Sum It Up:
The 2018 Volvo XC60 is another addition to Volvo’s reworked line up. One day soon, we will see more and more Volvo’s come out with this new styling.
The reliability and safety of the 2018 Volvo XC60 aren’t even a question for me. The Swedish meatballs have been doing the best for far too long for anyone to second guess.
I think that the interior of the new Volvo cars will really set a high bar for makes across the board, and it makes me excited every time I hear a new Volvo is coming out.
Look for a release date later this year for the 2018 Volvo XC60, and other great nerdy Volvo’s.
