With the confirmation being issued at the Tokyo Motor Show, the new 2017 Mazda RX7 has been officially announced. No release date has been stated yet, but we are sure that thaw will come in due time as the main news for now is that we are going to see the long anticipated car in action. The Japanese brand actually unveiled the concept for the RX-VISION, which the RX7 is going to be based on, at the Tokyo Show, making it a perfect introduction for the RX7.
The bring news about the RX-VISION concept is that it is being based on the Mazda’s KODO design language which many cars in the flock have already started to use and also the aggressive style it will transfer to the RX7 as well. The concept has a front-mated engine and sports an RWD drive as well, but the big announcement for the 2017 RX7 model is that it will incorporate the next-gen rotary engine under its hood.
The reason why the release date has not been made official yet is because the engine is still under development. Mazda’s engineers are doing their best to prepare the engine for the upcoming season and it actually depends on the paste that they are working which will enable us to see the car as fast as possible.
Currently available information state that the model is going to use a Wankel engine and the designers are trying to make it more fuel efficient and faster than before, which is the whole concept behind a next-gen motorplant. All the current available information are given to you here and you can find out everything there is to know about the look, design and the price of the 2017 Mazda RX7.
2017 Mazda RX7 exterior design
The primal idea about the look of the 2017 Mazda RX7 production model is that it is going to resemble the RX-VISION concept. Of course, the production model will go through a lot of changes starting from the concept model. The car does look aggressive right now and we expect the RX7 to retain a similar level of aggressiveness, yet we do not see a number of features making it to the production level. The low roof will be subsisted with a subtle and taller one but will give more headroom and shoulder room in return. The model may not lose a lot of its sexappeal as they plan to retain the B-pillar design, front windscreen and the chrome window surrounds. Other changes may result in a larger grille on the front fender, production door handles and multi-spoke wheels.
The front part will certainly go through a change. The new grille design is certainly going to be made while the headlamps are being updated. The overall shape of the front parts is going to remain the same but the design is going to be addressed. The chrome surround and the horizontal slats that are seen on the current Mazda are something that will be continued on the new one as well. The headlamps are the parts which need to be changed as the concept one has the slim, too-exotic one which are also not very production friendly. Based on the design of the headlamps, the lower section will follow suit and will be made to suit them. This also means reshaping and primping up the bumper are as well.
The funny thing about the RX-VISION concept is that it received a clean and production friendly design which might be completely transferred to the interior look of the 2017 Mazda RX7. But even despite the fact that much of the concept’s inside might make it to the production level car, we can expect and will receive some changes to the interior of the RX7. Changes are going to happen on the instrument cluster, the center console and the door panels. The center stack is going to go through the most changes with the addition of more buttons and controls placed there.
The infotainment system is going to be updated and there is going to be a large display added there as well. We assume that the screen is going to be mounted atop the dashboard which is the case with many modern Mazda vehicles. This update is going to be finished off with a multi-function steering wheel which will enable more flexibility that way.
The leather and fine materials that are seen on the concept are going to be present on the production level. But the aluminum inserts and high grade materials are going to be placed on the higher trims of the vehicle. The MX-5 is a perfect example how the RX-7 needs to be designed, but actually both of the interiors should be made a bit more affordable if they are planning to catch the attention of the customers.
2017 Mazda RX7 engine specs and news
The drivetrain of the 2017 Mazda RX7 is the most anticipated announcement that all the fans are waiting for. As they know it is going to be the next generation of a rotary powertrain matted under the hood of the car. But we do not have all the info as the engine is still being developed, keeping it also the largest mystery about the new 2017 Mazda RX7 vehicle. Currently known info is that the engine is going to be the Wankel and called the SkyActiv-R while it is aimed to rival the vehicle such as the Porsche Cayman in its performance. The latest Cayman produces 275 horsepower so we expect the RX7 to come with at least 250 hp on the table, if it is to be competitive, and a 0-60 mph performance of around five seconds and a top speed of 150 mph. The new rotary engine is also going to enable better fuel efficiency and less CO2 emission for the model.
Price and release date
The release date is still not official nor has it been hinted in any way, but it seems that the anniversary of the Cosmo, which celebrates its 50th year in 2017 is a fitting date for the release of the 2017 Mazda RX7. We assume that the production of the car will be made available till then. The base price is still unknown but we have estimated to be at $35,000 as a starting price for the base trim.
